Exploring Consumerism Through Collage

  • Make.Shift Art Space 306 Flora St Bellingham, WA, 98225 (map)

This workshop will be a way for participants to explore the influence of consumer culture on the personal and societal levels. We will use a range of materials such as images from newspapers, magazines, posters, and other recycled materials to create critiques and commentary through collage. Make.Shift will also be providing other art materials such as paper, markers, paints, yarn, and other craft supplies from our Open Art Studio. We hope participants can use this workshop to express feelings about consumerism and its impact on the environment and society as a whole.

We will work through prompts and exercises to spark ideas. These prompts will include ideas such as critiquing a specific consumerist product or trend, exploring the modern-day relationships of Holidays and culture with a consumerist world, and the intersections of consumerism with beauty standards and environmental exploitation. Throughout the workshop, we will share ideas and collaborate with one another, but folks can use the working time as they wish and propose their own questions to one another. This workshop will be a fun and engaging way to encourage group discussions on sustainability and social messaging through art.
