First Friday Art Walk- Veil between worlds - Hallowneen Open call art show

  • Make.Shift Art Space 306 Flora St Bellingham, WA, 98225 (map)

Its the most magical time of the year, again! Every year during October Make.Shift Art Space hosts a Halloween themed open call art show. Its always amazing to see what people dream up and bring to our door step. Stop by for the First Friday opening. Can’t make it? Don’t worry, we are open Thursday-Saturday 1pm-6pm to experience the show!

This exhibition invited artists to delve into the mysteries of what lies just beyond our perception-what might emerge from the shadows or what truths we might uncover when the barrier dissolves. Across cultures, there are whispers of moments when the veil grows thin, allowing glimpses into realms beyond our own. Due to the liminal nature of the veil it is experienced in a plethora of ways, some permanent while others are fleeting.

When found at a fixed geographic location, certain peoples have harnessed the power of such spots to build places of worship or transition, while others warn against what may lie on the other side. In Shintoism, Torii gates symbolize the transition from the secular into the sacred, denoting the presence of a deity. The act of walking through the gates causes certain mental barriers to fall away, allowing for a fluid connection between person and environment. Celtic tradition observed Samhain, the time when the veil was at its thinnest and spirits could enter the physical realm. To ward off these spirits, people would dress in costumes and light bonfires. Through a blending of cultures, Samhain eventually became what we now celebrate as Halloween. Regardless of how we experience these moments, they leave us with a sense of wonder and apprehension, and often we are set on a new journey, for better or worse. From eerie encounters to ethereal visions, we challenge you to explore both the seen and the unseen during this season of transition.
