Samish Woods Montessori in collaboration with local artists for the Kid's Art Walk 2026. 25 students in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade will create a written portion and a watercolor piece for local artists to use as inspiration to create their own art pieces of any medium.
The theme this year is The Butterfly Effect. The butterfly effect is a scientific theory that describes how the single flap of a butterfly wing can effect the atmospheric pressure in a completely different area causing a larger scale reaction. Our interpretation of this scientific phenomenon focuses on how one small action or choice can lead to a chain reaction of effects and has led us to notice the interconnectedness of community, nature, and each other. Choosing to be kind to someone can lead to greater change than we can imagine, picking up a piece of litter can start a an environmental awareness movement, etc. The students have started brainstorming their own cause and effects, they will write a story, and create a watercolor piece in tandem with their stories.
This year, slected art works will be available to purchase with all proceeds going to the Bellingham Food Bank!

One day an owl hatched from an egg. It was the first owl to hatch. When the other owls hatched, they learned to fly quickly. But the other owl was scared to fly out of the nest and fly around. About a month later, the owl that was scared, Hooty, started to get hungry. His mother tried to get him to fly but he was too scared. His mother tried to get him to fly for a week! Finally he flew! He had so much fun flying from tree to tree.

There once was a boy named Koen who was on the way to school with his dad. One time Koen asked his dad how to do all of the chicken scratch underneath the long division equation. His dad explained it.

A thriving world.

Well, that is a long story. Very well, I will tell you.
You know those things I told you at the start?
Well, Earth was those things. And more. Ambition, greed and a need for satisfaction.
The year 2027. The year that humans figured out how to twist atoms and particles to their will. Allowing them to pull themselves through reality to do things previously considered impossible. No, I cannot tell you how. That would break your mind. Such a luxury. They should have known.
All that….usage sent a ripple through reality and acted as a beacon for the daemons that would begin a long and bloody war between humanity and reality. The humans sent their army but soon fell to fighting each other. And the daemons, which could see the threads of fate, knew the humans every move. The humans mastered sorcery, but the daemons had created it. The humans developed order, and the daemons shattered it. The humans sent everything, but the daemons sent everything and more. And humanity was…destroyed.

The Leaf That Never Fell
One sunny fall day, some kids were carving pumpkins. One carved a face and another carved a dog. When they were done, a leaf came floating in from the open window. The leaf went through the house and down the hill. The leaf floated through the town and city but still made it back to the boy’s house. The kid ignored it. Time after time it kept showing back up and time after time he kept ignoring it.
When he was at a party, he saw the leaf one last time. The boy noticed its pattern and realized it had been following him everywhere. After this, he looked at other leaves and began to enjoy them. Eventually he started a Leaf Club and taught everyone all about the different leaves and where to find them. His club went crazy as everyone wanted to join. The boy made a lot of money and was able to buy a new house with a special place for the leaf.

The Forest
The day began unusually early for being a short winter one. There was an unsettling perfection in the air, as if everyone was holding their breath, not daring to ruin the day so young. Thus, Jonas woke up earlier than usual. He was alone in the house, his parents had already left for work.
Lured by boredom and slight curiosity, Jonas went outside to a small, unkept lawn surrounded by a fence. Noticing a loose fence board, he went to investigate. The board could swing to the side, revealing an unknown forest behind it. He could see the trees from his yard but didn’t think much about them. Again lured by boredom and curiosity, Jonas crawled through. It was stunning. A forest that wasn't accessible by path. He kept his discovery a secret but came back everyday, each time wandering farther and farther.

He strolled through the forest near the stream. The forest was beautiful. So different from lines of calligraphy or the symmetrical face of a doll. It was beautiful in a different way. It was the imperfection really. The imperfection and the sheer chaos. The largeness that made it so immensely enjoyable. Not that those things were considered beautiful, but the forest made him feel free, unjudged, and that was what was so deeply satisfying.
The forest truly changed him. It really did. It sparked a new found curiosity and appreciation for the world around him. It gave him certain happiness on dull days. And most importantly, it began his neverending search for knowledge.
Knowledge is a strange thing and can be found in strange places for those who look for it.
Jonas found knowledge through nature, the elderly, and literature. He found it everywhere. And though he never officially shared his understandings, word spread; changing people, their perspectives. And you can change the world when you see it in a different way.

All Because of a Screw
One Sunday, Jon had an idea to build a ship that could go to the moon. He hired a bunch of scientists to help him. When he was building the ship, he could not find a screw so he left it out of the build. After a year, it was finished. Jon transported it to the launchpad. He started a count down from 10.
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Blast Off!
He blasted off into space. When he came close to the moon, he remembered the screw he never attached. Then he heard a sssssssssss sound. He put on his space suit and looked where the sound was coming from. He got closer and saw that the place where he forgot the screw was leaking air. Then the whole panel came off and he got sucked out into the middle of space. He landed on the moon and was knocked out.
When he woke up, he was surprised he was not dead. He looked at how much oxygen he had. His suit had 9 hours of oxygen left! “Well, I guess I might as well spend this time doing something besides just sitting here. Hey! This crater looks cool!” He stepped into the crater and was teleported into a giant tower where he consistently heard a clicking noise. Something fell on his head. He picked it up and it was a marble.
“So that must be what the clicking is.” He kept walking until he made it to a garage door. He wondered what was behind it. He tried to open it and saw a keyhole with the key. He put the key in the keyhole and a square board lowered down. There were lots of knobs on it. He pressed the knob that said GO. A green marble dropped, bouncing through all the knobs. The green marble released a red marble, which got stuck in a black cup. A knob saying TRY AGAIN started to flash green. He pressed it and the marbles reset. This time he used objects that made it so the marble wouldn’t land in the black cup. He pressed the GO knob and heard click, click, click. This time none of the marbles got trapped and all made it to the bottom.
The garage door opened and there was his ship! It was all fixed and he went back to Earth.

The Whooshing Sound
Everybody told her, “That’s impossible.”
Everybody said, “No way.”
But Emalia? She would not listen…
Emalia was doing her homework while at the same time trying to listen to the conversation her mom was talking on the phone downstairs.
“I know, I know,” her mom said. “Yes, her room is still decorated in unicorns.”
Emalia looked around her room. Sure, everything in it had something unicorny about it, but that wasn’t bad, was it? Emalia, abandoning her homework, snuck downstairs, passed her mom (who was still on the phone), and snuck into the basement. This was usually where Emalia went when she was bored. But this time, something felt different. Emalia heard a whooshing noise. It sounded as though it was coming from underneath the floor. But that was impossible, wasn’t it? Emalia grabbed a chainsaw and started using it to chainsaw her way through the floor. All of the sudden she hit something and the chainsaw sputtered to a stop.
Once the dust settled, Emalia grabbed her fire escape ladder and started climbing down into the hole she had made. Once she had reached the bottom of the hole, she stepped off the ladder and onto the floor which was surprisingly soft and smelled of cotton candy. The whooshing noise sounded like it was coming from somewhere inside the room.
Emalia looked around and immediately noticed a washing machine in the far corner of the room. She walked toward it. The washing machine started pulling Emalia toward it with some sort of invisible force. Swoosh! She opened her eyes and found herself falling from the sky! She watched as the ground came closer and closer. Boing! Emalia bounced back into the air.
“Wait!” She wondered. “How did I do that? She bounced again and stuck the landing!
“This is weird.” Emalia muttered to herself.
“Is it though?” said a deep voice behind her. Emalia whipped around and saw a unicorn.
“Um,” Emalia said, “do you think you could take a selfie with me?”
“Sure. My name is Iggy,” said the unicorn.
Emalia was so happy because now she had proof that unicorns are real! Emalia took the selfie on her phone. “Do you think you could fly me up to the sky so that I can go back through the washing machine to go back home?”
“Totes,” Iggy said. Emalia clambered onto his back and he took off, soaring past some marshmallow clouds. Emalia saw the washing machine and pointed. Iggy soared over and dropped her off on top of the washing machine that was resting on top of a panda-shaped cloud. “Bye Iggy!” Emalia shouted because Iggy had already jumped off the cloud and was now flying back down. Emalia opened the washing machine door and felt the same sucking sensation from before.
When she opened her eyes, she found herself sitting on the ground in the same mysterious room from earlier. But when she checked her phone for the photo, she saw it had been deleted! Now she had no proof that unicorns were real. Emalia trudged upstairs to her room and flopped down onto her bed and fell asleep. Moments later, she woke up to the sound of something scratching her closet door from the inside. Emalia got up, curious, and opened the door. “Oh!” she cried. Iggy was inside her closet. Emalia ran downstairs and got her mother.
“Wow!” Her mother said. “I guess unicorns are real!”

When a Girl Meets a Friend
It was a rainy day when Mia saw some girls her age playing together, and that made her sad. That night, Mia wished for a friend. Someone she could play with. But she did not know how powerful that wish was.
The next morning, she woke up to a yelp. Mia was so shocked she jumped out of bed and looked out her window. She saw a dog stuck in the ditch, crying for help. She raced down the stairs and out the door to the dog. Her parents were right behind her asking what she was doing. Mia went right to the bathtub to give the dog a bath.
Mia remembered that the dog needed a name. “Daffodil! I’ll call her Daffodil! But Daffy for short!” Mia yelled so loudly that the house shook. Mia also remembered that tomorrow was Bring Your Pet to School Day. So Mia asked her mom if she could bring Daffy to school. The next thing she knew, everyone wanted to pet Daffy.
“Daffy is a star!” said one girl.
“Do you want to hang out?” said another girl named Emma.
“Sure!” Mia said.
“Are you free Saturday?” Emma asked. Mia said, “Yes!”
Today is Saturday, the day of the playdate. Mia had never had a playdate before. She did not know what to expect. Before she could think, the door went ding dong! She scurried to the door and said, “Hi Emma! Come in.”

The Night…
In 2732, on a rainy day in November, a girl that was short and had wavey brown hair named Penelipy was painting a night sky. It was beautiful. There were stars, planets, and galaxies. Over the next 3 months, Penelipy kept painting. She added more details and lots of stars. The painting got better and better.
After the winter ended, Penelipy, her twin Penepole, and their dad went camping. Their dad, Percy, told them stories about the stars and moon because they couldn’t see them anymore because of the smog. That camping trip, when they were roasting marshmallows, Penelipy looked up at the sky expecting to see a smog covered sky. But instead she saw her painting. Her painting was the sky. Then it hit her! She had painted the sky and it was amazing!
The next morning, the sky was back to normal. Penelipy thought that when her painting had been the sky that it was just a dream until she saw it 5 nights in a row. After thinking about it, she decided to paint the sky again, but this time she wanted to paint the day sky. When Penelipy got back from camping she started right away. She painted the day sky but also painted the sunrise, sunset, and all the different skies when weather happens.
After that, the sky outside was beautiful all the time and the sky was hanging in Penelipy’s room. Penelipy’s sister, Penepole, wanted her to add random stuff to the sky to give it a weird touch but Penelipy would not give in.
Soon after Penelipy finished painting the sky, people started noticing. Soon Penelipy and her family were in the newspaper and in the news. There was even a book written about Penelipy.

Once upon a time, there was a fox. Her name was Tracker. She had lost her mother to a bear just a few years ago. She now was on a journey to find a new home and a friend. She was scared of leaving her old den, so she didn’t. But she stood up and did it anyway.
She was journeying around, finding cool things like: rocks, LOADS of meat, plants, and rivers. Tracker was having so much fun, but then…BAM another fox jumped on her and put up a good fight. This was a very particular occurrence and after a while, they became friends.
Tracker’s attacker’s name was Silver Lilly. They continued together on an unknown journey to search for a new den. They walked for some time and saw something: A WOLF! Her name was Nix and she was the leader. The wolf turned around and pounced. It was two against one so they thought it would be easy, but as soon as they took down the first one, many more came flushing in from the nearby forests. They were cornered. They were at the verge of death when a miracle happened; Silver Lilly nuzzled Tracker’s side and everything paused. It’s like the power of friendship is killing off the bacteria (wolves). As they walked through the frozen wolfyard to escape, everything melted into piles of dark ooze.
Then, it’s like time reversed and everything was the same as before the first wolf attacked. Tracker and Silver Lilly ran so the first wolf couldn’t attack them again. They ran and ran until they were so tired. Suddenly, a nice cozy cave appeared in front of their eyes. They went inside and everything was perfect.
A few years later, they felt ready to go to war against the wolves. They had gotten everything prepared for the war. They started their run with an army behind them. They were wanting to save possibly the entire war against the wolves. They defeated the wolves except for the leader, Nix. Nix put up a great fight against Silver Lilly and Tracker but in the end, Nix was defeated. The world, the spirits, and nature was at ease.

A Boy and a Timelord
Alec was walking past the basement as he always did. He heard a ticking sound as he always did. He wondered what it was as he always did. He did not know what it was but he guessed it was a clock. He knew about Timelords, Keeper of Time. He went to the basement to investigate. Yes! It was a clock mounted on the wall.
“Alec, you are going to be late to school!” his mom yelled. Alec ran up the stairs, grabbed his backpack, yelled, “Bye Mom!”, and ran out the door because he had to learn about Timelords. Alec burst into the public school library and searched up Timelords. Not much known about Timelords. Alec waited until school was over and then burst out the doors and onto the sidewalk as fast as he could go to the Timelord’s Monastery. He tried to make his hair look nice. Then he walked in. He was surprised to see his teacher, Miss Cattermole, talking to the chief Timelord.
“Hello young boy!” the chief Timelord yelled.
Miss Cattermole turned around surprised. “Hi Alec, come join us. What’re you here for?”
“I want to learn about…” Alec hesitated, “Timelords.” He finished.
“Ok, what do you want to know?”
“What they do and who they are.”
“Well they can be anybody. Even you, if you want to.”
“Ok, I am really interested in Timelords.”
“If you become one, you can know everything you want to know.” said the now ecstatic Timelord. “Let me show you around. No one else is here, because they are at the factory.”
The Timelord led Alec to another room where the wall was a big square clock but it was no ordinary clock. It was rainbow colored and birds were painted on it. It was a magnificent clock.
“It is called the clock of Andor,” said the Timelord. “Oh! I almost forgot. My name is
Randy. And your name, may I ask?”
“Alec.”
“Aaah. Thank you, Alec.”
The Timelord kept on talking, but Alec was not listening. He was still thinking almost only about the clock. And now, 10 years later… Alec was the greatest Timelord of history because he started at such a young age. He was promoted to chief of the Timelords and now everybody knows who he is.

One day, Jen decided to go for a walk when she came across an old man who had dropped his newspaper. Jen helped him pick it up. The very next day, the old man offered her a job doing yard work. Half way through the day she had to go to the bathroom. On her way to the bathroom she passed a room that had to have at least one hundred potions. When she came back out she asked the old man about the room with the potions. It turns out that the old man is actually an EVIL scientist with plans to destroy the world. Luckily the old scientist took Jen as his apprentice. Eventually, they did succeed and the world was thrown into chaos.

My name is Red and I am alone. When I say alone, you might think I might mean sitting alone in the school yard. What I mean is alone in the universe. Let me explain.
Two weeks ago, I was feeling adventurous so I snuck into my H.P.S. (household protection spaceship). I am not usually allowed in there but I wanted to explore. Suddenly, I heard the loudest bang. It was so loud it deafened me. I stumbled backward and hit my head. Before I blacked out, I grabbed my P.I.C.R. (personal information companion robot).
When I woke up, everything was black. I stood up and felt around for the light switch. I flicked it on. I ran to the window and looked out. All I could see was black.
Then I turned to Jessie (my P.I.C.R) and asked what had happened. She responded in an animatronic voice, “According to my sources, the universe has contracted. Would you like me to comfort you?”
“No,” I responded.
And here I am alone.
Suddenly, there was a big bang and matter swirled everywhere. I grabbed some and started molding the matter like clay until it got big and shiny. I decided to call it a star. I realized that my helmet wasn’t on right and I hadn’t breathed properly in over three minutes. Everything went black but not before I covered myself in matter and turned myself into a constellation.

Once upon a time there was a boy named Mike. Mike was walking to school when a bird flew over his head. One of its feathers landed on his nose and he sneezed. That air made Hurricane Katrina. The bird flew away.
Mike’s house flew away so he had no food and tomorrow he would not have a lunch. A kid named Jack saw he had no lunch and he came and sat with Mike. He told Mike that he packed an extra snack and gave Mike a granola bar. They started talking about nonsense, like video games. Soon they became friends. Mike told Jack his house blew away so Jack invited him to stay at his house. They played video games together at Jack’s house. They had macaroni and cheese for dinner.
In the middle of the night, Mike woke up because he was hearing weird noises. He looked around and Jack looked weird. JACK IS AN ALIEN.

Pinecones Don’t Just Fall
One snowy day in a Northern Russian village, a boy was walking alone in a forest. He was taking a morning walk before lunch to collect berries. It was early winter so there were pinecones all over the elegant trees. The boy watched a particular one fall right in front of him with a powdery crunch on the inch of soft new snow.
When he was about to open the door to his hut, the village felt a shake and then a rumble. The boy thought he had imagined it but then snow slid off his roof. It had happened…
Across the world in Florida, SpaceX was launching a rocket to release a satellite fleet. When the pinecone dropped across the world at the boy’s feet in Russia, it hit a specific spot on the Earth, which tilted it enough to make a difference. If the pinecone had landed 1 millimeter in any direction, it would not have worked.
Back in Florida, they were setting up the rocket launch. T minus 3 seconds, the rocket was about to take off. Then the Earth tilted. The change made one of the boosters not catch fire and the force of it made the rocket tip over. The rocket shot sideways toward an empty school, which exploded.
Then, for the next year, the kids had no school and they did whatever they wanted.

One day, Fred was walking in the forest and he saw a really big tree. It exploded. Fred looked under his foot and saw a pressure-plate. He jumped back and ran. Once he was a mile away, he watched the explosion singe and burn the forest. The explosion was so long because other trees blew up right when the flame touched it. It looked like the domino effect. The last tree blew up, and when the dust cleared there was an enormous crater where the explosions were.
Fred peered down the crater’s edge to see bubbling lava. He could feel the heat on his face. He saw a huge pedestal with a large crystal ball on it pulsing with intense energy. Fred couldn’t help it. He jumped down onto a stony ledge and descended down the cliff. When he reached the bottom, he found a crack in the stone wall. He kicked it and fell through it. Fred banged his head on the stone and walked down a hallway to another stone wall. He walked through it and he was right behind the pedestal. He grabbed the crystal ball and felt a surge of energy pulse through his body. Without knowing, he jumped off the platform and flew out of the crater. Right when Fred and the crystal ball left the crater, it caved in! When Fred landed, the crater only looked like a small dent in the ground with no grass.

How Zentagle Was Made
Once there was a house that sat on the corner of a very quiet street. This particular house was the brightest house on the street. Painted in brilliant shades of turquoise and blue. Inside the house there was a girl about 14 years old. But she wasn’t like other girls. She didn’t spend long days playing outside or hours hanging with her friends at the mall. She had quit those things a long time ago. She was a girl who kept to herself. Her name was Lupin and she loved art.
She would spend hours at a time doodling and drawing. At one point, her parents even made her her own art room. She would have different drawing phases. She once had a phase where she would spend days and weeks drawing plants and fungi. Then she had a phase where the only thing she would draw were dragons. She would get into the tiny details of the scales. By the age 14 she was an amazing artist.
One day, she was sitting in her art room and for the first time ever, she didn’t know what to draw. Her pencil sat above the paper but no matter how hard she tried, her pencil would not draw. She sat thinking for several minutes until she thought: Well whenever I draw something, I always draw something that is real. Maybe I should try drawing something that isn’t real. Maybe I should draw something of my own imagination. Finally her pencil began to draw. She didn’t know what she was going to draw but she was excited.
When she was done, she stood back to admire her work. She had created a complicated tangle of lines and swirls on her paper. She started to create different tangles. Her favorite tangles that she created are called Wheelz, Shattuck, and Strircles. She decided that “Tangles” is quite a boring name. So she thought, “When I do these drawings, I feel a weird calming feeling. I’m going to call it Zentangle.”
And that is how Zentangle was made.

One Sunday, Bob had a nightmare. He dreamed that he woke up and heard a creaking noise from downstairs. He ran downstairs and found out that he left the front door open. He closed it and went to bed again because it was two in the morning. He somehow had a dream inside a dream. This dream was a quick image: him eating a strawberry. He woke up after and realized he was in a coffin. He saw a large snake that was looming above him. As soon as he saw it, he captured it. Bob knew it was going to escape.

It all started in a small, bland town in New York, where a little boy named Charles lived. The only colors you could see in the town were black and white. Even though Charles was a small boy, he had a big dream. He wanted to become a builder! Charles loved drawing ideas for houses that he wanted to build in the future. As he grew, Charles started experimenting with his dream. He started to build small things like dollhouses, toys, and small contraptions. Charles liked to make the things he built futuristic.
One day, while building a model house, he dropped a nail on the floor. Charles told himself that he would pick it up soon. He never did. The next day, as he was walking into his workshop to finish his model house, he stepped on something sharp. He looked down and saw a nail stuck in his bloody foot. As he pulled the nail out of his foot, some blood trickled onto the ground. When the blood seeped into the carpet, color began to spread across the usually black and white house.
He looked outside to see what was happening. Outside, he saw the grass that had always been dead and dry come to life. Every tree and plant started to become green and the sun started to shine again. It was all from that blood.
Even now, nobody believes the stories Charles tells, about how it was all from the blood. But Charles knows what happened. He was there to see it.

The Earthquake
This is the reason behind the 9.5 earthquake of 1960 in Chile.
A man was getting up in the morning before the earthquake and tripped on his clothes that he had decided to leave out the night before. He fell with all of his weight, which was just enough to make the tectonic plates slip. This hurt him, but not as bad as losing his wife to the earthquake that he had just started.
The next day, 1,655 people died, all blaming it on Mother Nature when nobody suspected it was that man.

The Expanded Gum
One day there was a girl named Penepole. Her mom was a professional swimmer and her dad’s name was Percy. She learned to hold her breath from her mom. By the time she was 15, she could hold her breath for 10 hours.
Her and her twin Penelipy were born in 2732. Penepole took daily dives and one day when she was at the bottom of the ocean, she met some people. They could hold their breath for 10 hours too. They found a coral reef for materials and decided to build a school. Penepole would dive down to school each day and swim back up when school was over. A few months later, her and some classmates got bored of their everyday routine and decided to plan a party. They planned a school dance and Penepole, Penelipy and their two friends went so crazy that there was a tidal wave so high it touched the sky.
The tidal wave was so big it covered the Earth and everything was underwater. Food was rotten, electronics broke, and things like gum expanded and became $2,500. People survived by catching animals to eat, learning to hold their breath, and buying gum so their money was spent and not dropped to the bottom of the ocean so people didn’t swim down and get eaten by sharks. Everyone lived happily ever after.
