Make.Shift Gallery is excited to announce our first exhibition of 2020! “Eat Your Heart Out” features two Bellingham-based artists who incorporate textiles into captivating meditations on intimacy and community.

Bridgett St. Meave is a European-born self-taught artist who currently calls Bellingham home. She creates multimedia soft sculptures of anatomical human hearts. These tender and textured pieces are hand sewn using all recycled materials. When speaking of her art, the artist often quotes the beloved comic Calvin and Hobbes: "My work is utterly incomprehensible and therefore it is full of deep significance.” On a more serious note though, she adds, “My work is me. I want it to be interactive. I am not telling you what to think, or feel while looking at my pieces. I expect the viewer to engage. To be free to see and feel my work on their own terms and add their own stories. This way it will become our work.”

Cecilia Karoly-Lister is an Alaskn-born artist currently working in Bellingham where she received her BFA in painting. Her series “cotton mouth” incorporates draped fabric into oil paintings of humans eating their own clothing. These paintings invite the viewer to critically consider the elevated status of clothing in defining gender, while chronicling the emotional struggle, acceptance, and eventual delight in finding one’s body as home.

The opening will be on Art Walk Friday, January 3rd from 6-10pm. For more information about the Art Walk or Make.Shift please visit our website at makeshiftproject.com or contact Gallery Director, Jessyca Murphy, at gallery@makeshiftproject.com.
