Jessyca is the Executive Director at Make.Shift Art Space. Before this role, Jessyca worked for over ten years in the field of domestic violence and sexual assault services. This workshop will cover the basics of trauma-informed communication, skills for fostering empowerment, and exercises for taking care of yourself while supporting others.

These workshops are open to anyone wanting to learn about creating a safer and more accountable community. It will focus on building skills for throwing safer DIY events, house shows, and concerts at all-ages and 21+ venues. We want everyone in the music and art scene to feel prepared and supported when harmful things happen.

Have you ever had to deal with someone being too rowdy at a show or not knowing what to do when a band gets called out? These workshops can help you build systems of accountability, support, and de-escalation to better navigate those kind of situations.

This workshop will be led by participants and facilitators of the Transformative Justice Learning Lab (TJLL), an educational program held by the Whatcom Peace and Justice Center (WPJC). This workshop will cover the tenets of Transformative Justice and will lead participants through the process of pod-building--a tool to prevent violence and harm by creating intentional communities.The WPJC has been a hub for grassroots community organizing in Whatcom County. Bike and Sketch to the Little Free Art Gallery. Participants will build their confidence riding to an unconventional art gallery and making small art out in the world. Quick bike checks and overview of confident city cycling practices in classroom. Bike to Elizabeth Park to sketch. Ride to Little Free Art Gallery on Eldridge.

Leave a piece, take a piece…Ride back to Make.shift. Must have bike in working order and be able to ride 4 miles at an easy pace (with stops for art.) If participants need to borrow bike or have Learn to Ride session, both are available through Smart Trips. Any art skill level is welcome.

What's this? A special open mic? That's right! September's open mic will focus on giving young performers a place to sing, dance, read a poem, do a skit, whatever they'd like!
